TheWitnessStand: Life At RGNLU

When you are at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, you know that it’s not all about the academics; we have a wide variety of extra-curricular activities from mooting, debating, theatre to sports.  Every day from 4-7 PM we have parliamentary debate sessions held by the Literary and Debating Committee. The boys generally like playing basketball or football on the campus field. We have drama practice for those interested in exploring the world of expressions and emotions. 

The fresher’s have a load of activities to occupy their time. From the fresher’s moot intra to the intra parliamentary debate to orientation sessions for the moots, projects and debates to workshop demo sessions for adjudication, boy are they kept busy. The Football League, tennis League, Cricket league, Basketball league, all promote intra and inter batch familiarity and sportsmanship. Events are also organized for the girls like Table Tennis, gully cricket and basketball. We also have a tradition of watching ‘interesting’ cricket matches like India-Pak or South Africa and India on the big screen (both boys and girls) in one of the halls in the college, sometimes, the teachers join us too.

We also have research centers for humanitarian law, consumer protection, labor law, criminal law, economics, social sciences and an initiative by the some of the students to teach the children of the laborers on campus. There is also a Punjab chapter opened by Increasing Diversity by Increasing Awareness (IDIA) in our campus to help those underprivileged children who wish to write CLAT and are unable to due to financial and familial constraints. We have committees like the literary committee to organize fests, MUN's and other competitions. We also collaborate with a lot of universities and organizations to conduct Moots and essays. The International Justice Mission (IJM) has a tie-up with our Labor research centre to conduct field work and also essays and other competitions. 

For those who want, this campus has a lot of activities to offer but as they as say, for the unenlightened mind, nothing will appeal even if it is right in front of their eyes.

RULES FOR SUBMISSION :

The word limit for the essay is 3000 – 6000 words (excluding footnotes). 

The cover page of the submission should contain the following details only:  Unique Submission Number , Title of the Essay , Abstract of the Essay (250 words) 

The cover page and/or main body of the essay should not carry any mention of the name, contact details, or the name of the institution. In any other case, it shall lead to immediate disqualification. 

Co-authorship to a maximum of 2 individual authors is permitted.

RULES OF THE COMPETITION :

Format of submission should be as per the rules of the competition. 

The soft copy of the essay should be submitted in MS Word file (.doc). 

All students are expected to acknowledge the primary source(s) of information. 

Multiple entries by an individual shall not be permitted, and shall lead to disqualification. 

Last date of Submission shall be 15th September, 2015 

The result for the competition shall be declared on 30th September, 2015.

International Journal for Legal Developments and Allied Issues [IJLDAI] is delighted to announce a call for papers for its Volume 1 Issue 3 which will focus on contemporary issues of law.

GUIDELINES

• Authors should not mention their name or any kind of identification mark in the manuscript. Any manuscript found to have any details of authors shall be rejected upfrontly.
• Article shall be of 2500-6000 words, book reviews: 1000-1500 words, short comment: 1000-1500 words.
• All submissions have to be made in MS Word format with Font size 12 and 1.5 line space.
• Co-authorship is allowed to a maximum of 3 Authors. 3 separate certificates will be provided to each author.
• The piece should not be overly technical, but practical and engaging.
• Papers must be written solely by the candidate, in English, and may not have been submitted for publication elsewhere.
• All the claims of the authors, in the body of the manuscript, are expected to be backed by reasons along with proper citations [any uniform citation will do] and shall not be merely an assertion.
• Submission should also mandatorily include the author’s view, in the conclusion, taking into considerations the aspects/contentions discussed throughout the manuscript.
• Plagiarism is strictly prohibited and shall lead to immediate rejection.

Conflict Chronicles: The Forgotten Genocide of Namibia

      When I first become aware of the genocide of the Herero and the Namaqua in Namibia a few months ago, I was stunned. I had up until that point never heard of what some historians call the first genocide of the 20th century. I soon learned that this genocide perpetrated by the German government paved the way for another campaign of mass extermination (i.e. the Holocaust) on European soil some 30 years later. Under German colonial rule, the Herero and Namaqua people were subjected to some of the worst atrocities and human rights violations and were victims of crimes against Humanity. An official report of these heinous acts were meticulously recorded in a "Blue Book". No-one was supposed to know what had happened.

This tragedy led to the murder of over 85 000 people.

When reading about the fate that befell the Herero and Namaqua, I couldn't help but feel saddened that their testimonies and stories had been largely ignored from the history books.

How could this be? How could the massive extermination of a people be overlooked? How can anyone justify the killing, rape, torture, beating, and persecution of innocent people on the basis of "race superiority"? How can we be so blinded by hatred and ignorance that we allow ourselves to kill in the name of preserving our "race/ethnicity"?

While it was such a long time ago, my heart feels heavy to know that these atrocious acts still take place to this day.

Don't we ever learn? I sincerely hope that one day this genocide will be acknowledged and the descendants of the victims will be provided with a platform whereby they can collectively grieve and move forward.
